OECD study points to caring teachers & well-resourced schools in S'pore

SINGAPORE: More than 90 per cent of Singapore students surveyed say their teachers are interested in their well-being and would give them extra help if needed.
This is according to the 2012 OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) study of 65 education systems around the world.
Singapore was also reported as the only education system in the survey where more than 90 per cent of schools are not suffering from a lack of resources such as computers and teaching materials.
Generally, Singapore students also said classroom discipline was conducive to teaching and learning.
Truancy, a lack of respect for teachers, and bullying are not hindering learning in their schools. And neither are over-strict, unprepared, absent or late teachers, said more than 90 per cent of the Singapore students surveyed.
Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education Hawazi Daipi shared these findings at the graduation ceremony of 329 new teachers on Tuesday.
Puah You Kai, valedictorian for National Institute of Education's Class of January 2013, said: "We are a really results driven society. We look at a figure and say, maybe we've achieved what we're supposed to achieve and maybe we've reached there. But I think the figure should serve to remind us that we need to at least maintain this standard, and do better."
Mr Hawazi said while the teachers in Singapore are well-trained and equipped with the right values to be good educators, they will also "need to have the support of parents and the community".
