Prof Maarten de Laat, Professor of the Professional Development in Social Networks of the Open University, Netherlands, visited NIE as part of the OER-CRPP Distinguished Visitors Programme from 1 - 5 September 2016. His visit provided a platform for sharing knowledge on the impact technology, learning and social designs has on the way these networks and communities learn and add value. Prof de Laat’s research also addresses informal learning and knowledge creation through (online) social networks and communities. The Office of Education Research, Ministry of Education and the Educational Research Association of Singapore had the opportunity to consult with Prof de Laat on his expertise through dialogue sessions.
During this visit, he conducted a research seminar titled “Designing for Connectivity - Professional Networking and Distributed Leadership“, in which he shared about practice-based research i.e. research work that involves reflecting and looking into localized solutions to a problem; and designing open networks of practice where there is an open collaboration with teachers/schools. He also explored the factors that contribute to the networked professional and the culture that enables this to take place.
