OER Hosts Dr Brent Duckor

The Office of Education Research (OER) hosted Dr Brent Duckor, an Associate Professor in the Lurie College of Education, San Jose State University from 23rd to 25th October 2017. Dr Duckor’s research expertise lies in formative assessment, learning progressions and classroom assessment and evaluation.

During his visit, Dr Duckor gave a lecture titled “Linking Formative Assessment Moves: Rethinking Translation, Application and Practice with a Learning Progressions Framework” to an audience of NIE staff.

Dr Duckor spoke about the relationship between formative and summative assessment and how formative assessment can positively impact students’ learning. He also shared on how teachers can build up their knowledge and capabilities to plan and enact formative assessment strategies within the classroom.
Apart from giving a lecture, Dr Duckor also conducted a workshop for teacher leaders at the Academy of Singapore Teachers, where he introduced participants to a formative assessment framework encompassing strategies that have been successfully enacted by math and science teachers in the United States. Participants also had the opportunity to try out the different strategies and engage in discussion on the merits and problems associated with formative assessment.
