OER Hosts Prof Brian Butterworth

The Office of Education Research (OER) hosted Prof Brian Butterworth from the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London, from 14 to 18 September 2017. Prof Butterworth’s research expertise lies in cognitive psychology and the neuropsychology of numbers.

During his visit, Prof Butterworth delivered a lecture, titled “From Neuroscience to Education and Back: Core Capacities and Core Deficits”, to an audience of NIE staff.
Prof Butterworth's lecture
Prof Butterworth shared on the core capacities required in order for humans to acquire numeracy skills and explained how differences in arithmetic achievement among humans may stem from differences in these core capacities. He also discussed the relationship between neuroscience and education and spoke about how both disciplines complement each other.
