Understanding the Physical Education Curriculum in Scotland from the Policy Writers’ Perspectives on Mon, 23 May 2011 at 2.00pm @PESS Journal Room

The presentation will outline how the new PE curriculum in Scotland was developed and will summarise the findings from a study that investigated policy writer's views about policy development and implementation. It aims to identify areas of promise for the future of PE in Scotland, however, warns that the absence of any debate about the nature and purpose of PE in Scotland is highly problematic. It argues that without such a debate, PE in Scotland in the 21st century may contribute towards the government's endeavours for a healthier nation, but reduce the educational value of PE to that primarily of recreation and physical activity.
