Principal Research Scientist Dr Rebecca Bull and Research Scientist Dr Alfredo Bautista, both from the Office of Education Research’s Centre for Research in Childhood Development, published a chapter in a book that provides a systems analysis of the early childhood sector in different countries. Their chapter was focused on Singapore’s childhood sector.
In this book titled “The Early Advantage —Early Childhood Systems That Lead by Example”, world-renowned early childhood researcher Prof Sharon Lynn Kagan and her team of international experts examined the innovative approaches to early childhood policy, practice, and service delivery in various systems. The book analyzed the quality, equity, efficiency and sustainability of services for young children in the six jurisdictions of Australia, England, Finland, Hong Kong, the Republic of Korea and Singapore.
This book was also featured in a commentary by The Hechinger Report, a nonprofit and independent news organization focused on inequality and innovation in education.
A second book, The Early Advantage 2 will be released next year. In the second volume, Kagan and her team will detail the “building blocks” that serve as the cornerstones of high-quality Early Childhood Education and Care. These building blocks are the synthesis of the research into how the differing jurisdictions approach quality and equity in their unique contexts.
In the near future, detailed country case studies and briefs on the systems studied will be available on the National Center on Education and the Economy’s Early Advantage website www.NCEE.org/EarlyAdvantage as an online resource. The authors for the Singapore case study are Dr Bull, Dr Bautista, Dr Hairon Salleh and Dr Nirmala Karuppiah of NIE.
