KUWAIT CITY, March 6: The Research, Education and Curriculum Department at the Ministry of Education is preparing a study regarding provision of meals in elementary schools, after which recommendations based on the study will be submitted to the Administrative Affairs Department, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting informed sources.

The sources indicated that the Administrative Affairs Department will determine whether it is necessary or not to sustain the program and review the negative aspects that were discovered in the three-year experiment.
He revealed that several school managers condemned the provision of meals for elementary students, indicating that most of the students were not interested in having the meals.
Based on the above point, the source pointed out that the school managers urged the concerned officials to cancel the program, adding that they had sent letters to their respective educational areas about the wastage of large quantities of food in the school on a daily basis.
To avoid unnecessary wastage, the school authorities have been distributing the leftovers to cleaners and employees of nearby cooperative societies as well as to some female teachers to take home.

Meanwhile, the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Singapore will soon start a study on the educational system in Kuwait, in cooperation with the National Center for Educational Development (NCED) in the country, reports Al-Kuwaitiyah daily quoting NCED Director General Dr Reda Al-Khayat.
Al-Khayat explained the two institutions will work closely with the National Center for the Assessment of the Strengths and Weakness of the Educational Sector. He said the study will continue for six months to cover all sectors, such as General Education, Technical Education, Private Education (Arabic, English and bilingual), and Special Education. He disclosed many tools will be used in conducting the study, including questionnaires which will be prepared by the top officials at the Ministry of Education. He added there will be questionnaires for the directors of schools, heads of the concerned departments and teachers, as well as the members of the Kuwait Teachers Association and Kuwait Union of the Owners of Private Schools and Cultural Institutes.

In another development, the Ministry of Education has allocated a budget of KD 13.975 million for the implementation of different projects, including the school preparations, within the fourth phase of its development program for fiscal 2012/2013, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting sources.
Sources revealed the ministry also intends to complete other projects, such as the establishment of four educational satellite channels, upgrading public and school libraries, distribution of books, preparation of school theaters, and allocation of outdoor game areas for the kindergartens.
