SERVICE LEARNING DAY 2008 ON FRIDAY, 22 FEBRUARY 2008, 10.30AM AT LECTURE THEATRE 1, BLOCK 6, NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION, 1 NANYANG WALK, SINGAPORE
Service Learning Day will be held at the National Institute of Education on 22 February 2008. Gracing the event is Prof Er Meng Hwa, Associate Provost, Nanyang Technological University.
Local service learning has become an integral part of NIE's initial teacher preparation programmes since 2005. All student teachers are required to complete a compulsory service-learning project entitled Group Endeavours in Service Learning (GESL) in the first year of their study at NIE.
GESL is a service-learning community outreach programme. Student teachers will perform service-learning projects in groups of about 20 and they are facilitated by an academic staff of NIE. Students will decide on the projects that they would like to undertake based on their resources and objectives. They will conduct a needs analysis with an organisation or community to ascertain the scope of the project.
GESL is an experiential learning experience for student teachers to acquire and develop skills in project management, self- and team-development, and community service. This will provide them the background and experience to eventually take on leadership roles in their schools' Community Involvement Projects and service-learning projects, which are part of the school's Character Education programmes.
Some project examples are in the areas of education, sports, arts and culture, health and environment.
The highlight of Service Learning Day will be the sharing of service-learning projects that were carried out both locally and internationally by student teachers between August and December 2007. Over 80 groups of students will showcase their GESL projects and four groups will share about their international service-learning projects. Some of these interesting projects are attached in Annexe A.
The programme for the day is enclosed in Annexe B.
Media personnel are invited to cover this event. Please confirm your attendance with Ms Chan Bee Ai by 20 February 2008. Members of the press are requested to meet Ms Chan at 10.00am at the entrance of Lecture Theatre 1. The dress code for the event is smart casual.
