Taiwan’s National Academy for Educational Research signed a memorandum of understanding July 17 with Singapore’s National Institute of Education on bilateral academic exchanges and research cooperation.
The memorandum was inked by Wu Ching-shan, president of the NAER, and Lee Sing Kong, director of the NIE.
Since its establishment last year, the NAER has signed similar cooperative agreements with several educational research institutions around the globe. The NIE is Singapore’s top academic research organization, the academy said.
Wu noted that Singapore’s performance in science, mathematics and language has been quite outstanding. The NAER hopes to gain a better understanding of the city-state’s educational methods, including teaching techniques and student assessment, to provide an inspiration for educational development in Taiwan, he said.
For his part, Lee said enhancing students’ abilities to face rapid international developments in the 21st century is one of Singapore’s core education strategies. This includes providing students with science, math and language skills, and nurturing their honesty and integrity, as well as their proficiency in teamwork and communication.
The NAER said that following the inking of the memorandum, the two institutes could collaborate in holding seminars and publishing articles in academic journals, thereby boosting the dissemination abroad of research results obtained in Taiwan and raising the country’s international profile in educational research.
