Academic Computing and Information Services

  • The Academic Computing and Information Services (ACIS) division oversees and supports the information communication technologies (ICT) needs of NIE. We have more than 70 staff from the Digital Solutions (DSD), Infrastructure and Database (IDD), Information Security (ISD) and Service Management (SMD) departments. Together, we work hand-in-hand with our internal and external stakeholders to build an advanced, robust and secure IT infrastructure, network and systems for our staff and students.

    BEA Award

    The BEA Award is given to organizations which are early adopters worldwide of the BEA Portal 8.1 in their Information and Communications Technology strategic Implementation. NIE was awarded for adopting the relatively new technology in the construction and implementation of its Staff Portal.

    Business Continuity Management System (BCMS)(ISO22301:2012)

    With the growing importance for business continuity, CSC kick-started BCMS to ensure that her core services will continue to operate with minimal disruptions in the event of disasters aligned to the ISO22301:2012 certification. NIE has successfully achieved the BCMS ISO22301:2012 certification for the scope of activities in the provision of computing services by CSC in Sep 2014.

    Information Security Management System (ISMS)(ISO27001:2013)

    With the accreditation of how NIE is managing her information security to an international standard (ISO27001:2013) in 2016, the ISMS team has completed the risk assessment. NIE has successfully achieved the accredited certification of ISO27001:2013 in November 2016.

    Singapore Standard SS 564 Green Data Centres

    In 18 Aug 2016, NIE achieved the accreditation in SS 564 - Green Data Centres certification. The implementation and adoption of an Energy & Environment Monitoring System (EnEMS) to monitor and manage the efficient use of power consumption in NIE Data Centre was testimony to her pursuit towards operational excellence.

    Institute of Higher Learning (IHL) Chief Information Officer (CIO) Memorandum of Understanding

    The non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was a step towards promoting communication, cooperation, collaboration and community spirit among the Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) in Singapore. The IHLs involved were the Institute of Technical Education, Nanyang Polytechnic, National Institute of Education, National University of Singapore, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Institute of Technology, Singapore Management University, Singapore Polytechnic, Singapore University of Technology and Design and Temasek Polytechnic.

  • The ACIS Divisional Director's Office is responsible for defining the IT strategy and architecture for NIE and drives the ICT development and data management in line with NIE’s initiatives.

    The office includes the following teams:

    Project Management Office (PMO)
    The project management office oversees the execution of projects within and across ACIS, NIE and NTU.

    IT Procurement and Administration
    The IT procurement and administration team provides centralized administrative support to all ACIS departments. IT procurement function for the institute is fulfilled by this team.


  • The Digital Solutions Department (DSD) champions the development and management of IT tools and applications to meet the needs of the institute. 

    The department includes the following teams:

    Academics Solutions
    The team manages all IT solutions related to Student Management & Academic Services, Teaching & Learning Technologies & Solutions, Web/Mobile Technologies & Solutions, and Business Intelligence & Application Integration.

    Corporate Solutions
    The team manages all IT solutions in the functional areas of Finance, Procurement, Human Resources, and Campus Solutions. 

    Research and Library Solutions
    The team manages all IT solutions in the functional areas related to Research Operations & Management, bibliographic records management, information & resource collection, library technology and subscription of scholarly articles and e-resources.

  • The Infrastructure and Database Department (IDD) oversees all of the institute’s IT infrastructure and database services including the flow, storage, processing and analysis of data to ensure operational efficiency and promote timely deployment of new technological products.

    The department includes the following teams: 

    Data Centre Management
    The team manages NIE’s data centre operations. This includes managed services, vendors, contracts and change management for the infrastructure supporting various enterprise applications and database environments within data centre facility. The team is also responsible for the management and facilitation of business continuity, IT disaster recovery and information security standards for our e-services.

    Database, Middle-tier and Identity & Access Management
    The team is responsible for all the databases, middle-ware applications that support the integration of IT systems and data, as well as identity and access management (IAM). These components form the building blocks for the digital information integration and identity for NIE applications and e-services.

    Enterprise Infrastructure Services
    The team oversees the technical architecture, frameworks, standards, projects and operations for enterprise network, cloud initiatives, systems and audio-visual infrastructure.

     
  • The Information Security Department (ISD) takes on the role of leading the institute’s cybersecurity initiatives. 

    The department includes the following teams:

    Audit, Compliance, Policy & Governance
    The team manages NIE IT risk, security audit and compliance. The team is also responsible for cyber and information security policies and protocols, security education and awareness.

    Operations & Monitoring
    The team is responsible for cybersecurity infrastructure, security operations, event monitoring and investigation. IT security incident response and IT forensics will also form the functions of this team.

  • The Service Management Department (SMD) oversees the support and maintenance efforts of the IT services across the institute. 

    The department includes the following teams: 

    End User Computing Management
    The team is responsible for the planning, design, management and facilitation of policy, assets, services, compliance, applications and data backup for end-user computing. 

    IT Service Delivery
    The team is responsible for the technical and engineering services including on-site and remote support for staff, students and learning spaces such as collaborative classrooms and special-purpose rooms (e.g. Net Gen Learners’ Terrace, Visitor Learning Centre and so on). The team is also responsible for customer relationship management and end-to-end customer experience in cases where requests and incidents are beyond the ability of the first level support, such as Service Desk.

    IT Service Hub
    The team is responsible for the Service Desk and first level technical support for NIE students, staff and visitors. The IT service hub team takes charge of NIE’s call centre, service counters, self-service portal and online chat services. The team will be the first point of contact for general IT service requests and IT incident responses. This includes the tracking and measuring of service levels and quality across the IT division.
