  • Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC) Academic Group
    ALC which comprises three divisions: namely, the Chinese, Malay and Tamil Divisions, aims to produce excellent educators and researchers who are devoted to mother tongue language education for the nation.     Learning Sciences and Assessment (LSA) Academic Group
    LSA is an interdisciplinary academic group focusing on understanding learning and assessment. The learning sciences focus on both formal and informal learning that involves designing, implementing, integrating the learning environments for pedagogical innovations, with or without technologies.

    The assessment focus is concerned with the recognition, reporting, rewarding and ramifications of learning and achievement. It envisages and evaluates the process and outcomes of learning in measurable and also in holistic ways for both summative and formative purposes.

    MME is committed to developing scholars of mathematics as well as mathematics education researchers and professionals.     Natural Sciences and Science Education (NSSE) Academic Group
    NSSE integrates several science content and pedagogical disciplines with a strong multidisciplinary approach to teaching and research. With this integration, disciplinary barriers between the sciences and related pedagogies are removed to pave the way for greater interaction and teamwork among academics and students alike. Research by biologists, chemists and physicists in NSSE is centred on many areas of current cutting-edge science such as agrobiotechnology, plasma physics, biological chemistry and materials science, while the science educators focus mainly on maximising the potential of every child with research on students’ learning approaches, problem-solving skills and new pedagogies in science.

    The work at Policy, Curriculum and Leadership (PCL) Academic Group (AG) focuses on interdisciplinary topics in educational policies, curriculum and leadership studies and other related topics to generate innovative and critical insights and advance these fields for scholarly and professional impact. The AG is constituted by professors, lecturers and senior educators (seconded teaching fellows) from the MOE.     Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Academic Group
    VPA which comprises skilled faculty in Drama, Music and Visual Art, provides educators with relevant theoretical discussion, engaged artistic practice and innovative artsbased pedagogy for constructing and conducting dynamic learning experiences in arts education. All VPA programmes are designed to equip educators with the knowledge, skills and experience they need to teach, facilitate and steer learning in, through and about the arts. These are done through theoretical seminars, practical workshops, performances and exhibitions, field-work and critical reflection.     Higher education has its own merits and key influential factors to affect a country’s education and its knowledge-based economy. This presentation shares about the Master of Education (Tamil Language) studies and their impact in Singapore Tamil education. With a set of core and elective modules, the Master of Education (Tamil Language) candidates who are mostly Tamil teachers have to understand the key theories and practices of second language Tamil education and how to progress further in making Tamil a living language in Singapore. Current course participants share their key take-aways and this will develop further with key research studies. They too have a strong commitment to contributing to the community, nation and to the world. In-depth content on Tamil Language, Culture, and their presence in education will enable the course participants to enact Tamil in their day-to-day Tamil classroom practice.

    This masterclass is about, Cross-Linguistic Transfer, a topic that we discuss in my MA course titled: Bilingualism and Biliteracy-Theory and Practice. Cross-Linguistic Transfer is about the way specific linguistic attributes, e.g. morphology, transfer or move from one language to the other in the cognition of the bilingual.

    Master of Education (English): Teaching English from the Angle of Ethics: The Significance of Ethical Criticism in a Global Age by Assoc Prof Suzanne Choo
    What are the different approaches teachers can use to teach the critical reading of texts? I discuss how we can go beyond an aesthetic appreciation of texts to applying Ethical Criticism that allows students to connect texts to moral dilemmas and issues of justice and human rights in our world.

    Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy dam failure in Laos on July 23, 2018 caused catastrophic flooding that resulted in many fatalities and displaced thousands of individuals. In this talk, I will share our investigation results on cause and impacts of the failure through remote sensing analysis, field survey and 2D hydrodynamic modelling.
