ICT0328 - Evidence-based Assessment for Learning

  • Assessment is integral to the learning process. It should begin with clarity of purpose and gather information to inform future practices. The quality of the evidence of student learning is, however, only as good as the design of the assessment. What are the factors that must be considered in designing quality assessment in a unit of work? What happens after the evidence comes in? How to use assessment results formatively? The answers to these questions connect the assessment design to the intended use of the evidence for the action part of learning. In this course, frameworks for designing unit assessment plans to ensure the quality of the evidence of learning will be presented. Principled approaches to interpret and use evidence collected to progress student learning will be introduced. At the end of the course, participants will be able to make informed instructional choices through knowing where learning is headed, where it is now, and using evidence to decide what to do next to improve student understanding.

  • 1.  Increase participants’ knowledge and skills regarding unit assessment planning and
    creating a Table of Specifications as a unit assessment plan for use in schools to identify and address gaps in learning

    2.  Enable participants to evaluate whether their current assessments meet the design criteria of quality for requisite learning

    3.  Give participants experience in applying principled approaches to interpret assessment results and use it formatively

    Upon confirmation, payment is required for all courses. Payment should only be made after the course placement letter has been sent to participants to confirm the application. Cancellations/withdrawals are not allowed. However, a replacement may be sent to attend the same course.

    NIE will proceed to invoice the respective schools, and they can make payment through GIRO or IFAAS. The amount payable should be credited into the NIE bank account number 518-041272-001.

    Payment by Cheque

    Please submit the cheque together with the application form. Cheque should be made payable to “National Institute of Education” and participant(s)’ name and course(s) clearly indicated on the reverse of the cheque.

    NIE will acknowledge receipt of the application form through email within one week. The course placement letter will be emailed to applicants who have been successfully placed in a course and upon course confirmation.


    Please note that NIE reserves the right to replace an instructor for a course if the lecturer is unable to teach the course due to unforeseen circumstances. No refund of the course fee will be made to participants.
