IME2066 – Effective Questioning and Facilitation Techniques for Secondary Mathematics Teachers

  • This course is designed for secondary mathematics teachers who wish to enhance their repertoire on the effective use of questioning and facilitation practices in the teaching of mathematics. It will engage the participants in analysing their current questioning and facilitation practices and trialing “new” techniques based on the Singapore mathematics curriculum framework. They will share their experiences during face-to-face sessions.

  • By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

    • Strengthen their capacity to use effective questioning and facilitation techniques to promote active learning among secondary school students
    • Become more reflective about their own questioning and facilitation practices
  • The four sessions, each of 3 hour duration, will cover the following questioning and facilitation areas:

    Session 1

    1. Classification of mathematics questions and purposes based on the Singapore mathematics curriculum framework
    2. Planning for delivery of questions during lessons
    3. Anticipating students’ responses

    Session 2

    1. Talk moves and types of feedback given to student responses
    2. Use of feedback as assessment for learning
    3. Monitoring students’ responses

    Session 3

    1. Selecting, sequencing, and connecting students’ responses to facilitate discussion during mathematics lessons

    Session 4

    1. Sharing of practices
    2. Reflecting about “new” discussion practices
    3. Planning to incorporate “new” practices into future mathematics lessons

    • Interested applicants will need to have a min. class of 15 pax before we can run the course.

    Upon confirmation, payment is required for all courses. Payment should only be made after the course placement letter has been sent to participants to confirm the application. Cancellations/withdrawals are not allowed. However, a replacement may be sent to attend the same course. 

    Payment through GIRO/IFAAS

    NIE will proceed to invoice the respective schools, and they can  make payment through GIRO or IFAAS. The amount payable should be credited into the NIE bank account number 518-041272-001.

    Payment by Cheque

    Please submit the cheque together with the application form. Cheque should be made payable to “National Institute of Education” and participant(s)’ name and course(s) clearly indicated on the reverse of the cheque.

    NIE will acknowledge receipt of the application form through email within one week. The course placement letter will be emailed to applicants who have been successfully placed in a course and upon course confirmation.


    Please note that NIE reserves the right to replace an instructor for a course if the lecturer is unable to teach the course due to unforeseen circumstances. No refund of the course fee will be made to participants.
