IME2096: Design Capacity for Mathematics Replacement Units

  • This is NOT a course – at least, it does not fit into the conventional image of “attending a course”. In these mixed-purpose sessions, we cut through ‘the layers’ by going straight to the challenges of actual mathematics instruction – we design materials that will help our students learn better. In the process, we will learn more about mathematics, our students, and design.

    Learning Dimensions:

    • Deepening knowledge and practice in academic curriculum
    • Deepening knowledge and practice in student development curriculum
  • At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

    1. Develop school-based curricular materials that meet the needs of the school’s mathematics programme
    2. Develop pedagogical design capacity required to craft suitable school-based materials
    3. Draw from the knowledge in the professional community beyond the bounds of a single school
    • First 2 hours: At a common location (e.g., one of the schools, or NIE), to learn about the principles and practices of the Replacement Unit Strategy, and the principles of design
    • Next 4 hours: In respective schools, to design a replacement unit. In one of these hours, with prior arrangement with the school, the NIE instructor will be with each school to provide advice to the design process
    • Next 2 hours: Over a suitable web-based platform, to discuss across schools further refinements with the design, focusing on the affordances corresponding to different commitments across schools
    • Next 2 hours: view representative video lessons from more than one school which are implementations of the replacement unit
    • Last 2 hours: At a common location, to reflect on the learning process, with specific view towards further refinements of the replacement unit for the next round of implementation in the respective schools
    • Secondary Mathematics Teachers
    • This course involves Mathematics Teachers from the schools in the same cluster.
    • If a school is interested, they must send at least 3 Mathematics teachers to this course.
    • At most 5 schools may participate – beyond this number, the quality of engagement among schools and the time the instructor can spend with each school will be compromised
  • Date : To be negotiated with cluster representative. The sessions must span over a period of at least two months
    Time : 12 Hours
Venue : One of the schools in the cluster for the "common location"

Note: NIE reserves the right to change or cancel the course due to unforeseen circumstances.

  • $129.40 for MOE participants and $707.20 for non-MOE participants (inclusive of GST and $1 copyright fee).

  • Please read the instructions below carefully before completing the application form.

Upon confirmation, payment is required for all courses. Payment should only be made after the course placement letter has been sent to participants to confirm the application. Cancellations/withdrawals are not allowed. However, a replacement may be sent to attend the same course.

    Payment through GIRO/IFAAS

NIE will proceed to invoice the respective schools, and they can make payment through GIRO or IFAAS. The amount payable should be credited into the NIE bank account number 518-041272-001.

    Payment by Cheque

Please submit the cheque together with the application form. Cheque should be made payable to “National Institute of Education” and participant(s)’ name and course(s) clearly indicated on the reverse of the cheque.

Please mail to: Office of Graduate Studies
