INS2159 - Marine Biotechnology - Innovative Genomic and Metabolomic [Cancelled]

  • A 2-day workshop, entitled "Marine Biotechnology - Innovative Genomic and Metabolomic Approaches", will be conducted for JC level science teachers in November 2018.  The workshop, held at NIE, serves to educate and increase awareness of educators on the importance of marine resources in Singapore with potential biotechnological and pharmaceutical applications.  The workshop uses authentic research as the framework to deliver science content on topics related to marine science, biotechnology and bioinformatics.  During the workshop, participants will work with the science content in a research setting supplemented with educational technology experiences designed for teachers and STEM career information for their students.  The workshop will be conducted using lecture topics in marine drug discovery, primer in genome mining and metabolomics.  Hands on IT-related activities, including online bioinformatic analysis and analysis of metabolomic data will be included in the workshop.

  • By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

    • To educate and increase awareness of educators on the importance of marine resources in Singapore with potential biotechnological and pharmaceutical applications.
    • To have an appreciation on the structural diversity of bioactive natural products used as pharmaceuticals.
    • To have an understanding on gene clusters involved in the biosynthesis of bioactive natural products.
    • To learn the application of online platform for annotation of biosynthetic gene clusters.
    • Introduction to drug discovery from marine sources
    • Classes of bioactive natural products
    • Introduction to biosynthetic gene clusters, such as polyketide synthases and non-ribosomal polypeptide synthetases
    • Hands on activity on the annotation of biosynthetic gene clusters
    • Hands on activity on the creation of MS-based molecular networking for metabolomics analysis
  • JC level educators
  • Educators with science background
