IPD2011 - Investigative Case-Based Learning (ICBL): Teaching Biology in the 21st Century

  • In this very interactive course, participants will participate in several field-tested examples of ICBL modules aligned to upper secondary biology curriculum. Topics covered may include plant physiology, molecular genetics and man’s impact on the environment. Participants will experience the investigative case-based approach, and consider the benefits and challenges of ICBL for their students. Participants will also get to work in teams to design their own ICBL modules, plan implementation as well as consider assessment of skills, knowledge, and attitude.

  • The course will introduce teachers to the Investigative Case-Based Learning (ICBL) approach for teaching science. Examples will illustrate how ICBL provides a rich context for meaningful scientific inquiry incorporating the 3Ps - problem posing, problem solving and peer persuasion – key actions taken by scientists during inquiry. The use of realistic problem scenarios promotes the development of 21st century competencies such as applying concepts to daily life society, questioning, problem solving, use of technology, collaboration, and communication.

  • This course is designed to:

    1. Introduce teachers to the ICBL approach for teaching Upper Secondary Biology;
    2. Illustrate the use of investigations, models, online resources and demonstrations linked to the cases;
    3. Demonstrate how the ICBL approach helps develop 21st century competencies; and
    4. Support teachers in designing, planning and assessment of an ICBL module.

    Upon confirmation, payment is required for all courses. Payment should only be made after the course placement letter has been sent to participants to confirm the application. Cancellations/withdrawals are not allowed. However, a replacement may be sent to attend the same course. 

    Payment through GIRO/IFAAS

    NIE will proceed to invoice the respective schools, and they can  make payment through GIRO or IFAAS. The amount payable should be credited into the NIE bank account number 518-041272-001.

    Payment by Cheque

    Please submit the cheque together with the application form. Cheque should be made payable to “National Institute of Education” and participant(s)’ name and course(s) clearly indicated on the reverse of the cheque.

    NIE will acknowledge receipt of the application form through email within one week. The course placement letter will be emailed to applicants who have been successfully placed in a course and upon course confirmation.


    Please note that NIE reserves the right to replace an instructor for a course if the lecturer is unable to teach the course due to unforeseen circumstances. No refund of the course fee will be made to participants.
