The Empirical Study of The Ways In Which History and The Past Are Understood By Students

  • Suhaimi Afandi is Lecturer with the Humanities and Social Studies Education Academic Group, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. He received his B.A. (Honours) in history at the National University of Singapore. He was awarded the NIE Overseas Graduate Scholarship, and completed his Ph.D. in 2012 at the Institute of Education, London. His study explores teachers’ and students’ conceptions about the nature of accounts in history. Prior to joining NIE, Suhaimi taught history and English Language (and General Paper) first, at a secondary school, and subsequently, at a junior college. His teaching and research interests include the empirical study of the ways in which history and the past are understood by students. He is keen on developing a history pedagogy that is responsive to students’ prior ideas and pre-existing understandings about history.
