The Dip Ed (General track) programme is a 2-year full-time programme and the Dip Ed (Specialisation track) programme is a 1-Year full-time programme, meant for GCE ‘A’ level holders and Polytechnic Diploma holders who intend to teach in the primary or secondary schools. The programme aims to prepare well-informed, competent and reflective teachers who understand the key concepts and principles of teaching and learning. They are trained to teach 1 – 2 subjects in the primary or secondary levels.
The practicum is spread throughout the entire Diploma programme and is developmental in nature. For the 2-year programme, it comprises two school attachment periods, i.e., Teaching Practice 1 (TP1) and followed by Teaching Practice 2 (TP2) While the 1-Year programme, it comprises only one school attachment period, i.e., Teaching Practice (TP).

1 The 2 “school visits” refer to the courtesy call and the end-of-practicum visit (not necessarily an assessment meeting).
2 For BA/BSc(Ed), Dip Ed and PGDE PE (Pri/Sec) TP1, the NIES can make the first lesson observation on (or by) the fourth week. If the student teacher is failing, the NIES will suggest ways of improving teaching – which the student teacher should act on. The NIES will conduct a second lesson observation to follow-up as soon as possible. Thereafter a moderator is appointed if need be.
